Utilita Energy began trading in 2003. The company’s founder and Chief Executive Officer is Bill Bullen.
In 2008, Utilita became the first energy company in the UK to install a Smart Meter.
By 2014, the company had reached 100,000 customers.
In 2017, Utilita not only welcomed their 500,000th customer, but they also launched their customer rewards programme – Utilita Extra.
In 2018, Utilita installed its 1,500,000th smart meter( reference needed as 1.5 million smart meters to 500k customers does not tally) and launched its Uswitch award-winning app – My Utilita. In the same year, the company also opened their first Energy Hub in Gosport, Hampshire.
In 2019, Utilita became a Patron of The Price’s Trust Charity and the Newcastle Arena was renamed the Utilita Arena. As well as this, the company also expanded into the telecoms sector with the launch of Utilita Mobile – a SIM-only mobile product.
In 2020, the Arena Birmingham became the Utilita Arena Birmingham and Utilita launched the Energy High 5 campaign to help households save money and the environment.
In January 2020, Ofgem began a probe into Utilita for bad practice and overcharging its prepayment meter customers
